A leading North American bakery company, with a specialized focus across all key bakery categories, including breads and rolls, donuts, pies, cakes, alternatives breads, and others, is in need of 3 Food Scientists. They bake their products in more than 40 facilities across Canada and the USA.

We’re hiring 3 Food Scientists on behalf of this bakery company to join their integrated R&D team to focus specifically on product development out of their principal biscuit/cookie bakery in Kitchener, ON. The role requires a highly technical food scientist who has ideally worked in cookies and crackers before, developing new formulations for key customers from scratch and providing oversight to the entire production process. You’ll formulate doughs, run plant trials, pressure-test quality standards in production, and partner collaboratively with packaging leadership on the R&D team, the Kitchener bakery leadership team, and sales/category teams to ensure our highest standards are met at every step in the commercialization process.

Core Accountabilities:

Product Development:

  • Contribute to business objectives and strategic product development by assisting with the evaluation and improvement of existing product lines to improve quality and maximize efficiencies.
  • Contribute to business objectives and strategic product development by assisting with and/or developing, formulating and testing new products to meet customer requirements. Ensure the products meet standards before market introduction/launch.
  • Report results/findings/conclusions and recommendations on all new ingredients, products, and suppliers to ensure a competitive advantage.
  • Develop partnerships with raw material suppliers
  • Follow the New Product Development Process including all documentation procedures.
  • Responsible for assisting, trialing, evaluating and reporting on potential new Company products from different divisions as required.

 

Technical Support:

  • Attend technical training seminars when needed.
  • Provide manufacturing, sales and marketing support.
  • Support procurement by evaluating and testing new and alternative raw materials
  • Provide technical information and technical support when needed.
  • Build a relationship with vendors and customers.

 

Reporting:

  • Actively update Sales and Marketing on progression of projects.
  • Communicate and record results/conclusions and recommendations of new product testing in accurate and timely manner to all appropriate personnel.
  • Interact and communicate with Supply Chain, Procurement, Manufacturing, Marketing, Quality, Sales, and other departments as needed.

 

Knowledge Development:

  • Keep updated on Bakery and Baking Ingredient Technology and technical skills by attending appropriate seminars, professional meetings, training, and any course work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bakery Science, Food Science or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in baked goods, and a passion for, and experience developing formulations specifically for cookies/biscuits/crackers would be ideal.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and prioritizing skills.
  • PC, Product Vision, word processing and spreadsheet skills.
  • Excellent planning, organization and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Experience working with customers
  • Previous knowledge and experience of product development.
  • Project Management experience
